Police nab bank robbery suspect
McDonald police have a suspect in custody who they say held up a bank in the center of town Monday morning.
Richard Allen Watters, 51, of 103 West Lincoln Ave., McDonald, was arraigned before District Justice Mark Wilson Wednesday night. Watters was charged in connection with the robbery at Huntington Bank. Watters was picked up by police in his home, less than 40 feet away from the bank.
Both the FBI and McDonald police have been investigating the robbery, calling upon the public to identify a surveillance photo of the suspect.
Police Chief Mark Dorsey said police received leads from various sources that led them to Watters. However, Dorsey said police were surprised to learn Watters lived within “a stone’s throw” of the bank.
“We certainly didn’t expect to have him live so close to the crime scene, that’s for sure,” Dorsey said.
Dorsey said police have worked tirelessly on the case since Monday.
According to police, Watters entered the bank at 100 W Lincoln Ave. and North McDonald Street about 10:25 a.m. Monday, when one customer was present. Watters allegedly gestured with his hand as if to indicate he had a weapon, but it was not immediately known if he had one.
