House committee to hold hearing on skyrocketing electric rates

1 min read

A public hearing at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Allegheny County Courthouse will focus on utility practices that exposed vulnerable electric ratepayers to skyrocketing payments this winter, said state Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-California.

“Utility practices are under full review as more attention is focused on the apparent gouging of electric customers on variable-rate plans,” said Daley, Democratic chairman of the House Consumer Affairs Committee, which is sponsoring Thursday’s hearing.

The session in the Gold Room at the courthouse, 436 Grant St. in Pittsburgh, will feature testimony from utility officials and representatives from the state Public Utility Commission and the state Office of Consumer Advocate.

Daley said he also is sponsoring a public forum on utility rates for Washington County residents at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bentleyville Volunteer Fire Co. social hall, 900 Main St., Bentleyville.

“The forum is open to water, gas and electric utility ratepayers in Washington County,” Daley said. “Utility experts will be on hand to help determine what help or options are available and to review utility bills.”

No reservations are required but residents are urged to bring a recent utility bill for review.
