New sentencing hearing ordered for Cecil man in 2009 chase

PITTSBURGH (AP) – A new sentencing hearing has been ordered for a western Pennsylvania man convicted of leading police on a 16-mile car chase before crashing in 2009.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the state Superior Court upheld 15 convictions against 51-year-old Nino Petrocelli of Cecil.

Petrocelli was originally sentenced to 36 to 60 months in prison but after an appeal was resentenced to 36 to 66 months in prison. The Superior Court said Wednesday that the judge failed to explain the reason for the increased sentence.

Jurors in 2011 acquitted Petrocelli of the most serious charges of aggravated assault and fleeing and eluding in the chase from Fineview to Millvale.

Court records indicate that Petrocelli won’t be eligible to have his driver’s license returned until 2044.
