Police: Boy, 4, killed by van after dad’s funeral

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Police in Philadelphia say a 4-year-old boy was struck and killed by a passing van hours after returning from his father’s funeral.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that police aren’t identifying the Chester boy or his family but described the chaotic accident scene just before 5 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators said the child had been watching a DVD in a parked car on the southeastern Pennsylvania city’s east side. They said the child leaped from the back seat upon seeing his mother outside and was struck by a van.

Police said emergency responders took the child to nearby Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where he died of his injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

Police said the boy’s father had been killed earlier this month in a shooting a few miles away.
