Central Greene to upgrade network

3 min read

WAYNESBURG – Addressing the need for enhanced computer networking in the Central Greene School District, school board members approved two building and grounds committee recommendations Tuesday.

The district will upgrade its internet technology network infrastructure based upon a proposal from Intermediate Unit 1. The upgrade will cost the district $183,454 with labor costs not to exceed $42,000. In a separate motion, the board accepted a proposal from Windstream Communications for a one gigabyte point-to-point Ethernet data circuit between the Waynesburg Central High School and Margaret Bell Miller Middle School. The monthly cost for the data circuit is $4,700 with a 70 percent E-rate reduction for the district.

District business manager Debbie Crouse said the upgrade is necessary to help speed up the network, which can be overtaxed at various times such as when district-wide testing takes place.

In other business, the district will undergo a renovation of its track surface at the Raider Field of Pride. The project will cost $254,000 through a state contract on a proposal from Track Surfaces Company. The total cost will be offset by a $25,000 grant previously received from the Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation for the project.

A proposal from Ellis Asphalt Paving, Inc. was approved for resurfacing of the playground at the Waynesburg Central Elementary, damaged during the roofing project there. The cost to resurface the playground is $17,055 with the district incurring $9,015 of that cost to come from the Capital Projects Fund. The district previously received $8,040 from the roofing contractor for its share of the cost, based upon age and previous wear-and-tear of the surface.

Under personnel, the board granted family medical leave for Alissa Pettit, a speech and language teacher in the elementary, and Jessica Moore, a third grade teacher there. The board also gave approval for a maternity leave for Rachel Heather, learning support teacher at the middle school. It also accepted the notice of tentative intention to retire from Catherine Carter at the end of the 2014-15 school year.

A transfer was approved for Shana Armstrong from a weekend/holiday security position to an after school security position at the high school. The resignation of Charlene Griedel as an afternoon shift custodian in the elementary was also accepted.

The board accepted recommendations from the personnel committee to add English teacher Brittney Bell to the professional substitute list and Jennifer Gumbarevic and Susan Golden to the district’s noninstructional substitute list. It also approved the recommendation to add Franklin Straight as a substitute bus driver for King’s Transit.

Under athletics and activities, the board accepted the following resignations, effective immediately; John Yates, head middle school boys soccer coach; Tanner Barnhart, assistant middle school boys soccer coach; Gerald Edgreen, high school assistant band director; Jillian McGowan, head middle school cheer coach; and Dolly Throckmorton, dance team coach.
