Washington Co. courts email scam seen again

1 min read

Washington County officials are once again warning of an online “phishing” scheme after another wave of fake emails designed to look as if they’re coming from court administrators are being sent to residents.

Steven Tkach, the director of technology for Washington County courts, said they’re seeing more fake emails announcing bogus court cases being sent to residents just a few months after they first noticed the issue.

Tkach said the emails with headings of “Hearing of your case in Court” and “Notice to Appear in Court” are mostly going into junk or spam folders, but should not be opened because they often contain viruses or spyware. People who do receive a bogus email should simply delete it, he said.

Washington County court administrators are not sending the messages and never send case information or notices of court dates via email, he said.
