United Way visits Produce to People

2 min read

WAYNESBURG – Dialing 911 is what brings help when lives are at stake, but what about getting help for the little problems of life?

On Thursday, United Way of Greene County was at Produce to People to spread the word about their newest empowerment program – 2-1-1 Southwest. It’s the number to call to be connected to resources during times of need.

“I was at the Hunger Summit and heard about Produce to People and realized I needed to be here getting the word out,” United Way director Barb Wise said.

She and fellow worker Hayley Finley had a table of information to share with the more than 600 people who came to get fresh produce from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. They passed out fliers, brochures and handy refrigerator magnets to remind people that one call links to help in 11 counties in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The big sign behind the United Way table listed some things to call 2-1-1 about: feeding the family, becoming a volunteer, getting taxes done, avoiding eviction, caring for an elderly relative, keeping the heat on, joining the workforce, finding a summer camp or protecting a friend.

Calls are answered 24 hours a day every day by certified Resources Navigators who connect to health and human services that are available. The information shared is up to date and all calls are confidential.

Those needing help can also go online at www.pa211.org.
