King Coal Show concludes today
CARMICHAELS – The 61st King Coal Show concludes today and the final day will be highlighted by one of the show’s more popular attractions – the King Coal Show Parade at 4 p.m.
Motorists are reminded that roads along the parade route and leading into town will close at approximately 3:30 p.m. They include Route 88 from the SkyView Drive-In to Carmichaels High School, West George Street from Circle K to the Carmichaels fire hall, and Ceylon Road from Wana B Park down Maple Street to Route 88 south.
Another popular event traditioanlly held on the last day will be the Charles Workman Memorial Car/Motorcycle Show at Wana B Park. Registration begins at 10 a.m. The cost to register a vehicle to be judged is $8. Dash plaques will be distributed and trophies will be awarded in several categories. There is no cost of admission for spectators. Various food items will be available for purchase at the event.
Pennsylvania Mine Rescue contest were held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Results are as follows:
• First place: John Helmick of the Harvey Blue Team from Consol Energy in West Finley.
• Second place: Rob Hutchison Jr. of the Cumberland JC Team from Cumberland Coal Resources in Waynesburg.
• Third place: Todd DeWitt of the Enlow Fork Gold Team from Consol of PA LLC in Claysville.
• First place: Jason Grasha of the Cumberland JC Team from Cumberland Coal Resources in Waynesburg.
• Second place: Travis O’Neil of the Bailey White Team from Consol Energy in Wind Ridge.
• Third place: Curt Hoffman of the Enlow Fork Green Team from Consol of PA, LLC in Claysville.
• First place: Patriot Coal Northern Appalachia Team from Patriot Coal Northern Appalachia in Fairview, W.Va.
• Second place: Cumberland JC Team of Cumberland Coal Resources in Waynesburg.
• Third place: Enlow Fork Green Team from Consol of PA LLC in Claysville.
• First place: Bailey White Team of Consol Energy in Wind Ridge.
• Second place: Enlow Fork Gold Team of Consol of PA LLC in Claysville.
• Third place: Enlow Fork Green Team of Consol of PA LLC in Claysville.
The results of the bike parade held Thursday were:
• Youngest peddling a bike: Skyler Smith, 2, of Greensboro
• Oldest peddling a bike: George Riess, 82, of Carmichaels
• Oldest bicycle: a 1955 bike peddled by Jim Harbaugh of Carmichaels
Winner in various age categories were:
• Birth to five: first place, Syd Miller, 5, of Carmichaels; second place, Kayne Drew, 3, of Waynesburg; and third place, William Burris, 5, of Carmichaels.
• Six to 10: first place, Allie Miller, 7, of Carmichaels; second place, Mattie Plavi, 9, of Carmichaels; and Skylar Nopwasky, 7, of Jefferson.
• Eleven to 15: first place, Amber Wolff, 11, of Nemacolin; and second place, Alexa Neely, 12, of Carmichaels.
The final events of the 2014 King Coal Show will take place on the fire hall grounds following the parade. The carnival will be open from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. DJ Dave Plavi will announce the winning parade units during that time frame. A free concert will also be held on the grounds from 7 to 10 p.m. with local band the Hamptons. Various food and beverages will be available for purchase inside the fire hall and on the grounds throughout the evening.
