Inmate pleads guilty to assault
WAYNESBURG – An SCI-Greene inmate, charged with aggravated assault for attacks on corrections officers on three separate occasions, pleaded guilty Wednesday to reduced charges of simple assault.
Brian Kirk Byrnes, 33, of Lancaster County, received a sentence of 18 to 36 months to run consecutive to his current sentence of 20 to 40 years for criminal contempt to commit criminal homicide and criminal conspiracy for a 1998 stabbing in Lancaster County.
Byrnes was charged with assaults Dec. 25, 2013; Feb. 6, 2014; and March 20, 2014, at SCI-Greene, involving four corrections officers.
According to criminal complaints, Byrnes punched Sean Hilling in the face and body multiple times Dec. 25, 2013, when Hilling, who was on shower duty, opened Byrnes’ cell door. Byrnes then punched Joshua Sumey in the back of the head when he came to assist Hilling.
On Feb. 6, Byrnes kicked Marcus Johnson in the knee. When he was being escorted to an arraignment March 20 for those charges, Byrnes punched Alan Moody in the face.
