A South Franklin Township man was arrested Monday by state police on charges filed in connection with an Aug. 10 dirt bike crash in which his 3-year-old son was seriously injured.

State police said the 2002 Suzuki Kyle Matthew Hilderbrand, 20, of 180 Old Scales Road, was driving when he crashed was reported stolen in June 2013 in Armstrong County.

State police were called to Quaker Ridge Road at the entrance to Fairview Cemetery in East Finley Township for a report of a dirt bike crash. The boy was sitting in front of his father when Hilderbrand lost control on loose gravel around a bend and crashed, police said.

The boy, who was wearing a bicycle helmet, suffered a broken right leg and mild concussion. He was flown to Children’s Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh for treatment. The elder Hilderbrand was taken to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital.

Hilderbrand reportedly told police he was at his grandmother’s house at 229 Old Scales when he went for a ride. He claimed to have found the dirt bike on Craigslist. Trooper Ryan Deems said Hilderbrand told him he traded a four-wheeler and $200 for the bike and had it for about a month. However, he had no title or registration for it, police said. The owner of the dirt bike told state police there was $1,116 in damage to the bike.

Hilderbrand was arraigned Monday before District Judge Ethan Ward on charges including receiving stolen property, reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of children, improper transfer of ownership of a vehicle, not having the proper license class, failure to drive at a safe speed, careless driving and reckless driving. He was placed in Washington County jail on $25,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 23 before Ward.
