Ohio House sets vote on ‘heartbeat’ abortion bill
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A bill that would impose some of the nation’s most stringent abortion restrictions is set for a Wednesday floor vote in the Ohio House.
Even if the so-called “heartbeat bill” passes, the lower chamber is likely to be its last stop as Ohio’s two-year legislative session comes to a close.
The GOP-led House Health Committee passed the bill last month after several emotional hours of testimony and debate. The divisive measure also cleared the committee and the full House last session but died in the Ohio Senate.
Senate President Keith Faber has said he doesn’t intend to take up the bill this session either.
The legislation would prohibit most abortions after the first detectable heartbeat, or as early as six weeks into pregnancy. Similar measures have faced legal challenges elsewhere.
