Charleroi police charge two in traffic stop
Charleroi Regional police arrested two people during a traffic stop Wednesday night in the 1200 block of McKean Avenue in Charleroi.
Arrested were Leslie Kay Bashur, 43, and James Stevenson, 38, both of 121 Branthoover St., Belle Vernon.
An officer was monitoring traffic when he clocked a car driven by Stevenson going 41 mph in a 25-mph zone. When told why he was stopped, Stevenson apologized and told the officer his license was suspended.
As he talked with the driver, the officer said he could smell marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Stevenson was searched, and police said they found a small amount of marijuana and rolling papers.
Stevenson gave police permission to search his car, in which Bashur was identified as the front-seat passenger. On the floor was Bashur’s purse. Inside it, police said they found a stamp bag of heroin and a loaded 9 mm Luger handgun. Bashur does not have a permit to carry the gun. She also is not permitted to carry a weapon because of a felony drug conviction, police said.
Both were arraigned before District Judge Joshua Kanalis. Bashur was arraigned on charges of person not to possess a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia. She was placed in Washington County jail on $40,000 bond. Stevenson was arraigned on charges of possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, speeding and driving with a suspended license. He was released on $2,500 unsecured bond.
