EPA grant targets runoff feeding Lake Erie algae
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Ohio’s environmental regulators are handing out a grant that will be aimed at reducing farm runoff that contributes to algae in Lake Erie.
The Ohio State University Extension Service will get $42,000 for a project that is designed to benefit crops and reduce runoff by changing how farmers use manure on growing fields in the late spring and early summer.
Researchers have been trying to find ways to cut down the farm runoff
The money will go toward demonstration projects in seven western and northwestern Ohio counties.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency says the extension will work with farmers in Darke, Fulton, Hancock, Mercer, Paulding, Putnam and Seneca counties.
