Area man arrested on gun charge
A 911 call for a report of a woman needing help early Sunday ended with the arrest of a Washington man on a firearm charge.
Demetrius Allen Moye, 22, of 390 Shirls Ave., was arrested by Washington police on a charge of carrying a firearm without a license.
Police received a report from a 911 dispatcher that a woman had called and needed assistance in the area of West Walnut Street and Hall Avenue. When police arrived, they could not locate the woman but did find a shoe near a skid mark on the street.
Concerned the reported caller may be in danger, police started to search the area. They then saw a car traveling at a high speed and thought it might be connected with the call.
Police said the car, driven by Moye, traveled down Franklin Street and turned left on West Maiden Street and then onto South Lincoln Street. He was stopped in the 10 block of South Lincoln by Officer Daniel Grossman.
When backup arrived, Grossman was told by another officer Moye has a history of having weapons. Moye was searched, and police then searched the car, where they said they found a loaded 9 mm near his seat. Police said the weapon was loaded with eight rounds and a ninth in the chamber.
Moye was arraigned before District Judge Joshua Kanalis and placed in Washington County jail on $2,500 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Monday before District Judge Robert Redlinger.
