Philly to take students from closed charter school
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Philadelphia’s public school district said it will immediately enroll about 400 kindergarten through eighth grade students whose charter school abruptly shut down over the holiday recess.
The Inquirer reported Monday the district will accept students without transcripts after Walter Palmer Leadership Learning Partners Charter School canceled classes effective Wednesday.
Palmer closed its high school in October, affecting about 280 students.
The School District of Philadelphia has been fighting to revoke Palmer’s charter amid academic performance and financial stability concerns.
A court ordered the school to return $1.5 million to the district after finding it enrolled double the amount of students allowed.
The school was also the subject of a federal investigation.
Administrators last month invoked their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination 77 times at hearings on its charter.
