South Fayette residents request a crosswalk

2 min read

At the request of residents from The Berkshires subdivision in South Fayette Township, commissioners are going to look into the possibility of extending the sidewalk near Old Oakdale Road and also adding a crosswalk.

At the board of commissioners’ workshop meeting Wednesday, Deborah Carter-Gordley, who lives in the Berkshires and is on the landscape committee, said the residents of the plan are requesting an extension of the sidewalk near Old Oakdale Road so residents and their children can have easier access to the school district’s campus.

Carter-Gordley pointed out that many of the more than 320 residents of the plan use the school’s playground for recreation after school and there is no sidewalk that goes to the school. She said if the walkway were to be extended and a crosswalk added, it would provide residents there with safer access to the school.

She said right now there’s “no way to safely cross Old Oakdale Road,” Carter-Gordley said.

Township Manager Ryan Eggleston said the administration would look into a Safe Routes for Schools Grant to help pay for the project if it were to move forward.

“We’ll see where we can go with it,” said board President Joseph Horowitz.

In other business, the board discussed the township’s pending fee resolution. The resolution includes several fee increases, including building, sign and others. The fee resolution also calls for application fees of $5,000 for oil and gas development, along with an additional $25,000 that must be given to the township to be placed in an escrow account from which it may draw from or be reimbursed for administrative expenses and engineering costs associated with reviews and inspection.

The board is expected to vote on the fee resolution at its Jan. 15 meeting.
