Meeting recap: Canon-McMillan School Board

Action: The board approved a tax index resolution in accordance with the Taxpayer Relief Act of 2006, which will prohibit raising the tax rate in the school district by more than its index of 2.5 percent for the 2014-2015 school year.

The board announced that Canonsburg Middle School was recently redesignated as a “school to watch” by the Pennsylvania Association for Middle Level Education. The school also was recognized for receiving $5,000 from the Highmark Foundation for the school’s commitment to establish a healthy environment. The grant will be used to fund health and wellness initiatives.

Gregory Taranto, principal of Canonsburg Middle School, was recognized for receiving the Frank S. Manchester Excellence in Journalism Award from the PA Association of Elementary & Secondary School Principals. Taranto received the award for making significant contributions to the association’s publications and displaying leadership.

Lewis Crouse, a custodian at Cecil Elementary School, was the first recipient of the board’s Outstanding Service Award. Superintendent Michael Daniels said Crouse gave out Christmas pencils and McDonald’s Happy Meal vouchers to students at the school. Daniels awarded Crouse a plaque for his generosity and said he hopes the service award becomes a tradition in the district.
