Trial opens in slaying of Allegheny Co. youth in apartment
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Trial has begun for a man accused of standing on the threshold of a western Pennsylvania apartment and firing several shots through the door, killing a teenager in front of his family and wounding two others two years ago.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that opening statements were delivered Tuesday in Allegheny County Court in 23-year-old Eric Barlow’s trial in the January 2012 death of 16-year-old Daniel Peek.
Assistant District Attorney Michael Berquist said Peek’s younger brother had just opened the door to go buy candy when the gunfire began.
Defense attorney Kenneth Haber said the case rests on the identification by the youth, who only saw the shooter for a second or two, and “There won’t be one single shred of evidence” linking his client to the crime.
