Liberty Tunnel work to begin
Painting of the Liberty Tunnel in Pittsburgh is set to resume Monday with several closures planned for the nightly work.
The outbound lanes will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through July 10. The lanes will have an around-the-clock closure from 8 p.m. July 11 through 6 a.m. July 28.
Detours will be posted, and motorists are advised to look for alternate routes.
Painting on the inbound side will be done in early August. Work on the tunnels, being done by Swank Construction, will be completed this fall.
This is the fourth phase of an $18.8 million project to improve the 5,889-foot tunnel, which was built in 1924. Approximately 45,000 vehicles use the tunnels on an average day.
