Miss Rain Day to support wounded soldiers
Stephanie Mitchell, Miss Rain Day 2013, is required to do one service project as part of her contractual obligation and she chose to walk to raise support and awareness for wounded service members because with family members and friends currently serving on active duty.
“I wanted to give back to our nation’s armed forces – the few who fight to protect the freedom of this great country. Often times, many of these inspiring individuals come home with wounds you can and sometimes can’t see like combat stress and depression. Because they’ve risked everything for us, I’m committed to raising awareness and funds for these wounded service members and their families,” she said.
The three-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m., starting and ending at the Greene Cove Yacht Club trailhead entrance to the Greene River Trail. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
With advancements in battlefield medicine and body armor, an unprecedented percentage of service members are surviving severe wounds or injuries. In addition to the physical wounds, many are dealing with the invisible wounds of war, including combat-related stress, major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Mitchell currently has two cousins serving in active duty. Justin Mitchell, an orthopedic hand specialist, is currently deployed to Afghanistan and Jerred Mitchell is stationed in Germany. She also has friends who enlisted and are currently in boot camp.
