Daytime burglaries on rise in Greene County
CARMICHAELS – Cumberland Township Police Department is asking residents to be on alert after several homes were burglarized during the day while no one was home.
Three burglaries were reported in the Carmichaels areas of Old Waynesburg Road, Ceylon Road and Maple Street on July 6, 8, and 11. State police reported an additional burglary July 12 in Clarksville.
Ruth F. McDowell, 84, who was the victim in that burglary, told state police she came home after running errands to find her home was entered and ransacked.
McDowell said the burglary occurred between 10 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.
Police are recommending residents take extra precautions to secure doors, windows, garage doors and vehicles. Homeowners also should be on the lookout for suspicious behavior, such as someone knocking on multiple doors, walking close to homes, or spending extended periods of time in an area with no apparent legitimate purpose.
Police advise residents to make note of specific details, including the sex and race of the person, type of clothing and a description of suspicious vehicles.
Homeowners should immediately report any suspicious persons or activity in their area to their local police department by calling 911.
It is helpful, police said, for homeowners to have photographs and documentation of their jewelry, firearms and other valuables.
Home safety alarms and surveillance cameras should be turned on and all valuables secured when a homeowner leaves, police said.
Cumberland Township police are asking that anyone who may have security camera footage from the areas of the burglaries to come forward. To provide a tip of suspicious activity or information regarding these burglaries, the non emergency line for Cumberland Township Police is 724-966-8296 and the non emergency number for state police in Waynesburg is 724-627-6151.
