Canon-McMillan requests zoning exception for new school

1 min read

Cecil Township’s zoning board will hold a public hearing next week regarding property the Canon-McMillan School District owns and wants to use for the construction of a new elementary school.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. July 21 at the Cecil Township municipal building to consider a special exception request to construct an elementary building at 40 Muse School Road, near the existing Muse Elementary School. Assistant Superintendent Scott Chambers said Cecil Township’s current zoning law for the R-2 district does not permit the construction of a school, even though it “seems crazy because there’s a school there.”

The district’s plan is to construct a school for grades kindergarten through four to eventually replace Muse, Cecil and First Street elementary schools. All schools would remain open until construction of the new building is complete. The project is expected to cost close to $30 million, and the district has a projected occupancy date of 2016.

The building would include eight kindergarten classrooms, 26 regular classrooms and additional special needs classrooms. Chambers said HHSDR, a Pittsburgh-based architecture firm, is currently working on a building design plan.
