Rain Day 5K Race winners announced

WAYNESBURG – The 36th Annual Rain Day Race Sunday brought out a larger crowd than in past years. The sunny and warm weather made conditions for running and walking somewhat stressful for the 279 participants in the race.

This year, 194 people participated in the 5K run, 46 people participated in the 5K walk and a total of 39 kids ran the kids one-mile run.

Eighteen-year-old Sean Hilverding of Spraggs came in first place in the male division with a time of 16:22. Last year, Hilverding won the 15-to-19-year-old age group category with a time of 17:07.

Kirsten McMichael, 17, of Eighty Four, repeated as the top female overall winner with a time of 19:51. Her time last year was 19:10.

This year’s Rain Day Race offered families the opportunity to register as a team to show their family spirit. There were 71 runners and walkers from age 3 to 87 among the 15 teams registered. The oldest participant was Charles Baily Sr., 87, who was also a part of the largest team, Baily Family, while the youngest participant was Samuel Milinovich, age 3, from Fairmont, W.Va. Five family teams were drawn at random and received gift cards for Dairy Queen to enjoy a family treat. After the race, participants enjoyed more than 250 hot dogs.
