Garden Club awards scholarship
CARMICHAELS – Douglas Kowalewski, a senior at Carmichaels Area High School, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Rices Landing Town and Garden Club.
He is the son of Robert and Rita Kowalewski of Crucible and has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average. He plans to attend Gettysburg College and major in history. He was president of the National Honor Society, editor of the school newspaper, and was a member of the gifted program, Academic League, debate team, marching band, pep band, concert band and Envirothon team.
In the community, he managed three blood drives this year for the American Red Cross and is a performing member of the American Legion Post 400 Band. He is a recipient of the Outstanding Scholar Award, as well as numerous departmental awards at his school.
Kowalewski will pursue a major in history, with a double minor in Civil War studies and jazz studies. He was chosen to receive an Abraham Lincoln Scholarship at Gettysburg in the amount of $25,000 a year for four years.
He is also the recipient of several county and state envirothon scholarships, a MEAEOPP Scholarship, the Walter Samek III Memorial Scholarship, and the William and Shirley Hanley Memorial Scholarship.
After completing his undergraduate program, he plans to pursue a doctorate in history to become a history professor.
