Charleroi valedictorian Nicholas Gavazzi

Charleroi Area High School will graduate 126 seniors at its commencement 7 p.m. Thursday at the high school’s amphitheater. Valedictorian is Nicholas F. Gavazzi, and salutatorian is Christopher J. Schaum. Both students will be speaking at the commencement.

Gavazzi is a son of Robert and Kathy Gavazzi of Charleroi and the late Monica Gavazzi.

Gavazzi achieved Challenge Program award for highest QPA, highest honors, and membership in National Honor Society. He also received the Renssealer Medal, Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award, Harvard Book Award, Rodney Baird Award and Jeff Gilchrist Award. He was a member of student council, REACH, Academic League and Relay for Life. Gavazzi was captain of the wrestling team, earning fifth place at the PIAA state championships.

He plans to continue wrestling at Clarion University and pursue a degree in chemical engineering.

Schaum is a son of Chuck and Susan Schaum of Monongahela.

Schaum achieved highest honor roll, Charleroi Rotary Student of the Month and Charleroi Lions Club Cub of the Month. He also received a Challenge Program award for STEM and the Charleroi Area School District Education Foundation Scholarship. He served as co-captain of the varsity golf team, vice president of National Honor Society and secretary of the STEM club, and was a peer tutor and member of physics club, astronomy club, Spanish club and ski club.

Schaum plans to attend Robert Morris University to pursue a degree in manufacturing and industrial engineering.
