Pa. aviation bureau calls for move of new prison
UNIONTOWN (AP) – State aviation officials say a new prison planned in Western Pennsylvania about a half-mile away from an airport will have to be shifted to comply with state guidelines.
The state transportation department’s Bureau of Aviation raised concerns about the Fayette County Justice and Rehabilitation Center planned in Dunbar and North Union townships.
The Herald-Standard of Uniontown reports that the bureau says part of the building falls under the transitional surface of the Joseph A. Hardy/Connellsville Airport.
The state code for airport rating and licensing requires that a runway have “an obstruction-free transitional surface.”
Bureau officials said shifting the site 250 to 260 feet to the northeast would solve the problem.
Al Ambrosini, county commission chairman, said shifting the location shouldn’t be a problem since “everything is just on paper.”
