Local caregivers support group formed
WAYNESBURG – A group of local community members have banded together to form a caregivers support group intended for individuals who provide care for a family member or loved one.
The group will meet at 7 p.m. the third Wednesday in the Guesman Room at Southwest Regional Medical Center.
“This group will provide learning, support and sharing for those who have a loved one requiring care in a nursing care, personal care or in-home setting,” said Carol Patterson, founder of the group. “We hope to help foster emotional support in a safe and nurturing environment.”
The first meeting June 18 will feature Nancy Riggle of the Area Agency on Aging. Riggle has a vast background in senior care giving, having served as a social worker in a nursing home where she facilitated the Alzheimer’s support group. She has also served as a local representative for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Each meeting will have a theme, with plenty of time for sharing personal stories or concerns.
“We hope we can provide an escape and safe haven for those who may feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities of caring for a loved one,” said Patterson. “If we can help just a few people, it will be worthwhile.”
Future meetings are scheduled for July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17.
