County prepares for holiday celebration
WAYNESBURG – Patriotism will be on full display at the Greene County Fairgrounds for the Waynesburg Lions Club’s Fourth of July celebration.
The day will begin with the traditional pancake and sausage breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. in the 4-H building.
Registration for the seventh annual Lions Car Show beginning at noon, is from 10 a.m. to noon. The event runs until 3 p.m. and features antique, classic and custom cars, trucks and motorcycles. There will be food, music and drawings during the show with trophies awarded at 3 p.m.
Children’s activities will get under way at 11 a.m. and will feature free horse-drawn wagon rides.
Opening ceremonies for the evening session will be at 5 p.m. with a short address and a flag ceremony, followed by the Little Miss Firecracker Pageant on the grandstand stage at 5:30 p.m.
It is a noncompetitive pageant for girls ages 5 to 8. The participants will appear in patriotic attire and each will be interviewed on stage. Little Miss Firecracker is determined by each contestant drawing a wrapped flower from a basket. The off-colored flower decides who the new queen will be for 2014. The winner will receive a crown, sash, trophy and bouquet. Each of the contestants will receive a participation medal.
The Kim Alexander Band will perform at 7 p. m. on the main stage in front of the grandstand. The band hails from Pittsburgh and is known as a “wedding party” band, having made appearances at The Meadows Racetrack & Casino, the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel lounge in Washington and other clubs and venues throughout the tri-state area.
The band plays a wide variety of music, from pop, popular rock, country and oldies.
The evening will conclude with a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.
The Lions Club food booth will be open under the grandstand from 11 a.m. until closing. All activities and shows are open to the public at no charge, with the exception of food and drink.
All proceeds are used to benefit Waynesburg Lions Club charities in the area.
