UPMC exec must testify about alleged promise
PITTSBURGH (AP) – A judge said a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center executive must testify about promises allegedly made to two victims wounded by a crazed gunman at a psychiatric clinic.
The victims, Kathryn Leight and Jeremy Byers, are suing UPMC over the March 8, 2012 shooting by John Shick at UPMC’s Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. Shick was fatally shot by campus police.
Leight and Byers contend executive vice president Elizabeth Concordia visited them in the hospital and promised UPMC would pay their medical bills and some related expenses. Concordia has denied that, which is why the victims’ attorneys asked a judge to force her to give a sworn deposition.
The victims said Concordia’s words should stop efforts by UPMC to recoup workers’ compensation expenses from $500,000 those victims and others got from Shick’s insurance.
