A Burgettstown man is in Washington County jail facing charges filed by police in Smith Township as well as two departments in West Virginia.

Donald Levi Stroud, 24, of 359 Steubenville Pike, Burgettstown, was reportedly found Wednesday hiding in a detached garage at 1294 Steubenville Pike by township police, who were assisting U.S. marshals.

Police in Brooke County, W.Va., initially obtained a warrant for Stroud’s arrest last month on drug charges.

On Feb. 15, police said Stroud went to the Weirton, W.Va., police station in Hancock County to pick up his father, who was arrested earlier that night.

When he pulled into the parking lot, Stroud reportedly drove around the lot twice. Police tried to box him in, but officers said Stroud, presumably aware that he was the subject of a warrant, drove around the cruiser and fled. Police said they pursued Stroud at speeds reaching 70 mph and eventually found his vehicle crashed in the median of the ramp from Route 2 to Route 22. Officers said they followed footsteps into the woods and spotted Stroud behind a grocery store. After officers told him to stop, he again fled on foot, police said, but he was caught after a chase.

Police did not indicate what charges Stroud is facing in that incident.

Smith police obtained a warrant for Stroud on charges of reckless driving, reckless endangerment, corruption of minors, theft and unauthorized use of a vehicle stemming from a Feb. 6 incident on Langeloth Road.

Township police received a report of a reckless driver who almost hit two children getting off a school bus. Witnesses were able to get a license number for the vehicle, but it had been reported stolen.

After the incident, police said a boy was seen getting out of the passenger side of the vehicle at a convenience store. Police were able to identify him, and he reportedly identified Stroud as the driver. Two other teenage boys also were passengers in the vehicle.

Stroud was arraigned before District Judge David Mark on the fugitive charges as well as the reckless endangerment and corruption charges. Mark placed Stroud in jail without bond on the fugitive charges and set a $50,000 bond on the Smith charges.
