W.Va. Senate committee passes breast-feeding bill

1 min read

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – A bill to allow women to breast feed in public was approved by the West Virginia Senate Health and Human Resources Committee.

The committee reinserted an amendment that women who do nurse in public must use discretion.

The bill states breast feeding is a basic act of nurturing and important for the health of both mothers and children.

Sen. Chris Walters said a similar bill was proposed by the Senate four different years but didn’t pass the House. This bill originated in the House.

Sen. Ronald Miller said this kind of bill makes good sense and promotes health. He said he didn’t realize breast feeding was not protected.

Walters said West Virginia is one of only two states that don’t have a law protecting breast-feeding mothers.
