Washington police searched again Thursday in the area of West Walnut and North Franklin streets where a 32-year-old man was shot multiple times Wednesday night.

Daniel C. Jordan was taken to Washington Hospital, where he was stabilized before being flown to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. City police Lt. Dan Stanek said Jordan is on a ventilator as he receives treatment for gunshot wounds to the torso. Stanek said Jordan’s prognosis was unknown Thursday.

Police believe the shooting incident started about 7 p.m. in a parking lot at the intersection of West Walnut and Victoria streets across from First Lutheran Church. Shots continued to be fired as Jordan ran across Walnut and south on North Franklin toward Immaculate Conception Church before collapsing on the sidewalk.

Police said when Jordan was found, he had cash in his right hand. Two vehicles traveling on Franklin were hit by gunfire, but the occupants were not injured.

Ash Wednesday Mass at Immaculate Conception concluded just before the shooting started. The Ash Wednesday service at First Lutheran went on as scheduled at 7:30 p.m., but some of those in attendance could not leave because their vehicles were blocked off by police tape.

“It is definitely fortunate no one else was hurt,” Stanek said. “It was a busy time of night with services going on at both churches.”

Stanek said investigators canvassed the area again Thursday. There were no surveillance cameras in the area of the shooting.

“We want to take a look during daylight and make sure there is nothing we missed,” the lieutenant said Thursday. “We will talk with (Jordan) when he is taken off the ventilator.”

Detectives also planned to talk with several callers who reported the 7:01 p.m. shooting to the 911 center.

Minutes after the shooting was reported, East Washington police spotted a black man dressed all in black, including a black hooded shirt, running on East Beau Street in the direction of East Lane. A man dressed in black reportedly was seen fleeing the scene of the shooting.

A South Strabane Township police officer in the area spotted a man matching the description on a sidewalk along North Avenue. As the officer turned around his cruiser so he could talk with the person, the man turned and ran between houses into backyards along North. Police searched but were unable to find the man. He was described as being 20 to 30 years old, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a medium build.

Stanek said Jordan is originally from Pittsburgh, but city police have had contact with him in the Washington area since 2002.

“He hadn’t been around for a while,” Stanek said. “I didn’t know he was back.”

Stanek recalled arresting Jordan in connection with an October 2002 robbery. In June 2003, he was sentenced to 10 to 20 months in Washington County jail after pleading guilty to the robbery, as well as charges unrelated to the robbery, including violating the Drug Act, escape and theft.

Jordan’s most recent appearance in Washington County courts was in April 2013, when he was sentenced to 12 months probation after pleading guilty to a charge of retail theft.
