Butler man dies trying to rescue pets from fire

1 min read

BUTLER (AP) – Officials say a western Pennsylvania man ran into his burning home to rescue his pets and succumbed to the fire.

Fire Chief George Ban says firefighters found the body of 22-year-old Paul Jarvis Jr. in a second-story bedroom of the house in Butler.

Bystanders told police that Jarvis had come outside, but then went back into the burning home to rescue the animals.

Firefighters got about 10 feet into the home but were driven back by heavy fire.

Jarvis lived with his father, who was at work at the time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Ban says it appears the blaze started in the kitchen.
