Trinity Superintendent Paul Kasunich’s blood-alcohol content was 0.207 when he was pulled over in Ohio Township Feb. 2.

A toxicology report showed Trinity Area School District Superintendent Paul Kasunich’s blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit when he was charged Feb. 2 with driving under the influence by Ohio Township police.

According to police, Kasunich’s BAC was 0.207 when he was pulled over on Mt. Nebo Road shortly after 2 a.m. for driving erratically. Under Pennsylvania law, anyone with a BAC over 0.08 is considered legally drunk. Kasunich’s BAC places him in tier 3, the highest level of DUI.

On Tuesday, Kasunich waived a preliminary hearing on drunken driving charges. His formal arraignment is scheduled for April 25.

If convicted, Kasunich could face fines and jail time, but his attorney, Robert Del Greco, said Kasunich is a candidate for the state’s Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program because he is a first-time offender.

The ARD program allows first-time offenders who successfully complete the program to have charges against them dismissed and their record expunged.

Kasunich said Friday that he regrets his actions that night.

“I recognize I made a mistake and I fully intend to take responsibility for it,” said Kasunich. “If there’s any way I can make a positive out of a negative, I want to do that.”

Trinity Area School Board suspended Kasunich with pay.

“I know that he regrets his transgression,” said Del Greco. “It’s an embarrassment to him and a message that he does not want to send to students. A DUI is not acceptable. He realizes that and will suffer the punishment due to him as a result of that. He’s particularly bothered by the fact that as someone who’s the superintendent of a school didstrict, it’s behavior contrary to the message and the teachings of the Trinity School District.”
