Washington man arrested after struggle with troopers

A Washington man faces a variety of charges after allegedly struggling with state police during a traffic stop late Saturday in Washington.
State police said it required a long struggle and the application of force to apprehend Charles Darnell Thomas, 19, of 758 Allison Ave., following the traffic stop about 11:30 p.m. at Donnan Avenue and Third Street, court records show.
Thomas was a passenger in the vehicle troopers pulled over for having an inoperable brake light. Police said they smelled marijuana upon approaching the vehicle and asked Thomas to step outside after noticing him moving about, the affidavit states.
He allegedly began to struggle with Trooper Scott Dowlin in an attempt to flee, drawing Trooper Creighton Callas to assist. The fight continued until Thomas was taken into custody by the troopers, who suffered minor injuries to their lower extremities, the record indicates.
Police accuse him of also having three bags of marijuana, a digital scale, pills and a large amount of money in a sack at the time of the traffic stop.
Thomas was charged with aggravated assault, escape, simple assault, resisting arrest, drug possession with intent to deliver and possession of a small amount of marijuana.
He was placed in Washington County jail on $75,000 bond set by District Judge Larry Hopkins.
