Trial set in Pittsburgh police beating of student

1 min read

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Opening statements are expected in the retrial of three Pittsburgh police officers – one who has since quit the force – on civil rights claims that they wrongly arrested and beat a young black performing arts student in January 2010.

A federal court jury in August 2012 ruled the officers didn’t maliciously prosecute Jordan Miles, but deadlocked on whether the officers used excessive force or wrongfully arrested Miles, who was then an 18-year-old honors student.

Richard Ewing has left the Pittsburgh police to become an officer in McCandless, a suburb just north of the city. The other defendants, Michael Saldutte and David Sisak, are still on the force.

Miles claims he was beaten for being a young black man in a high-crime area. The officers acknowledge beating Miles because they mistakenly thought he had a gun.
