Route 19 corridor work progressing
Work by utility companies continue to progress along the Route 19 corridor from Murtland Avenue to Ridge and Locust avenues in Washington as crews gear up for more construction along the roads starting next month.
The project is the second of two phases to reconstruct the Route 19 corridor. Work on this phase started last summer. Work on the first phase was completed last year when College Street was reconstructed. Lincoln Street was completed in 2012.
One snag occurred last week when a gas line was hit while a utility pole was being moved on Ridge, forcing the evacuation of Lombardi Auto Service and a few units in Lincoln Terrace.
“Progress has been good,” said Scott Faieta, assistant construction engineer for the state Department of Transportation.
Steve Zottola of Zottola Construction, the company doing the work, said temporary traffic signals are to be turned on March 27 along Ridge Avenue at the intersections with Lincoln and College.
During the construction, there will be no designated left turn lane for traffic going from Ridge to North College.
Demolition work on three buildings as part of the project is nearly complete, said Roxanne Rossi, PennDOT project manager.
As work ramps up in the area, Faieta urged drivers to use caution and avoid it when possible.
