Area man sentenced for assault
WAYNESBURG – A Crucible man who assaulted his wife last February, punching her in the face and fracturing her orbital bone, was sentenced Monday by Greene County Judge Farley Toothman to 90 days to 23 ½ months in jail.
Robert D. Cumberland, 32, of 273 Fourth Ave. pleaded guilty Oct. 9 to simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment. A charge of aggravated assault was amended to a charge of recklessly endangering.
Cumberland had come home drunk and began punching his wife, who was later taken to the hospital and treated for a fractured orbital bone, hemorrhages in both eyes and a perforated tympanic membrane in her ear.
Cumberland will be permitted to serve his jail sentence on weekends or under work release, according to the judge’s order. Following his jail sentence, he will serve eight months on house arrest and the remaining time on regular probation. He also is prohibited from using or possessing alcohol or illegal drugs, must pay a fine of $1,000 and perform 225 hours of community service.
