2 Penn State rugby players waive arson hearing
STATE COLLEGE (AP) – Two Penn State rugby players waived their right to a preliminary hearing on charges they torched the team’s storage shed, allegedly because they’re unhappy with their coach.
Twenty-two-year-old Christopher Petri and 21-year-old Sean Herbert had been scheduled to appear before a State College district judge in Wednesday. Instead, they waived their rights to that hearing Monday, meaning they’ve conceded that prosecutors have enough evidence to take the case to trial.
The university has suspended the team while a campus judicial review has begun.
The suspects are charged with setting a Jan. 15 fire that destroyed an equipment shed for the rugby and cross country teams. The blaze caused more than $30,000 in damage.
Petri’s defense attorney declined comment. Herbert’s didn’t immediately return a call Wednesday.
