Hailee Basher of the Little Eagles team, Youth Ambassador and cancer survivor RJ Ehnerd of East Allegheny, 4-H Relay team member DJ Jones and sisters Jessica and Jennifer Self take another lap around Waynesburg Central High School’s track Saturday for Relay for Life.

WAYNESBURG – Once again, spring weather was at its unpredictably mixed up best, just in time for the Saturday into Sunday morning Relay for Life on the track of Waynesburg Central High School.

Clouds played tag with hours of sunshine, then burst into torrents of rain in mid-afternoon, then cleared and managed to behave through the night.

Father Francis Frazier lead a prayer service Saturday night and dye-hard walkers kept up the pace until the morning prayers of Pastor David Stains brought this year’s event to an end.

Now, the fundraising numbers are being crunched, even as donations continue to come in and it’s good news all around.

“We’re at $140,000 and still counting,” Relay chairman Janice Blair Martin said.

Months of preparation, hours of legwork and that last burst of energy that kept feet on the track and survivors, families and friends manning team booths through 24 hours of relay are over.

“It was a blast,” Blair Martin said.

“The dedication of the people who are involved is amazing, People working together is what makes this happen. It takes a lot of faith, prayer and wanting to do good.”
