Donora condemns personal care home, residents relocated

1 min read

DONORA – The code enforcer in Donora condemned a personal care home that had prior state Department of Public Welfare violations after a routine DPW inspection Thursday found unsafe conditions in the building.

The DPW assisted in relocating the 41 residents of McKean Manor to other facilities after the building at 787 McKean Ave. was closed, said Kait Gillis, the department’s spokeswoman in Harrisburg.

Online DPW inspection reports indicate McKean Manor was cited for 15 violations by the department since September 2009.

The most recent violation, in October, involved an incomplete diagnosis record confirming the medicine a resident was being administered. The home saw its license temporarily downgraded after it was cited for failure to report to wthe Area Agency on Aging a sexual abuse case involving two residents between February and April 2012, DPW records show.

The business owner, Veerasammy Perumal, could not be reached Friday. No one answered the telephone at the business.

It was not immediately known Friday what would happen to his license to operate the Donora business, Gillis said.

The century-old brick building formerly served as a hotel and bar.
