Carmichaels talks sestercentennial
CARMICHAELS – Though still more than two years away, some people in Carmichaels are beginning to talk about the community’s sestercentennial.
In 2017, Carmichaels will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding by James Carmichael.
Carmichael was among a group of pioneers who came to the area in 1767. The town of Carmichaels was eventually laid out on his land.
At Tuesday’s Carmichaels Borough Council meeting, borough secretary Brandi Streit told council she was approached by Bill Groves about starting to plan for the anniversary.
Streit said she would be willing to help out with the planning and talked about forming a committee to organize a celebration and get people involved. She provided information produced for the Carmichaels bicentennial celebration in 1967. Streit asked members of council for any ideas they might have regarding the event.
In other business, councilman Ralph McWilliams complained about winter cinders still being on borough roads.
Jim Petrone, borough street worker, said he has been busy cutting grass and handling other duties and hasn’t had time to sweep. He said he also can’t sweep after a rain when the cinders are wet.
The borough approached Cumberland Township about having the township use its sweeping truck to clean the roads, but the township’s truck broke down, Streit said.
Mayor David Jack also said he received complaints about garbage at Chris Watson’s house on George Street. Watson was sent a registered letter regarding the matter; it was suggested he be cited.
