Hughes named award recipient
Washington League of Women Voters President Judy Hughes has been named the recipient of the 2014 Liberty Bell Award.
First presented in 1967, the Liberty Bell Award is given by the Washington County Bar Association as part of its annual Law Day programming.
It is awarded to nonlawyers for outstanding service in promoting a better understanding of our form of government, encouraging respect for law and the courts, stimulating individual responsibilities, contributing to the effective functioning of government and developing an appreciation of the rule of law.
The award will be presented to Hughes at the Bar Association’s public Law Day Celebration at the Washington County Courthouse at 6 p.m. Monday. The event is free and open to the public.
The celebration will also include the presentation of Law Day Contest awards to students grades 2 to 12.
At 4:30 p.m., prior to the celebration, Larry Spahr, Washington County director of elections, will present an educational program on this year’s Law Day theme, “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters.” Pre-registration is requested by contacting the Bar Association at 724-225-6710 or wcba@washcobar.org.
