A New Eagle woman is in good condition at a Pittsburgh hospital Tuesday after she crashed her vehicle into a Monongahela bank the previous morning.

Monongahela police Chief Brian Tempest said Charlotte Dickie, 86, crashed her vehicle into the side of First Niagara Bank, 318 W. Main St., just after 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Tempest said she was traveling on Fourth Street when she hit the gas pedal instead of the brake as she approached the traffic light at Fourth and Chess streets.

“She then went through the parking lot, over a customer parking sign and into the building near the drive-through window,” Tempest said.

No customers or employees inside the bank were injured, although the bank closed for the remainder of the day due to the extensive damage, Tempest said. Tempest said there was damage to the interior, with the impact knocking over filing cabinets.

The bank opened for business as usual Tuesday, said bank spokesman Bob Butter. He had no information available on a damage estimate.

Dickie was taken to Monongahela Valley Hospital and then flown to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital for her injuries. Tempest said she suffered abrasions when the air bag deployed in her vehicle.

Tempest said police do not anticipate filing charges against the driver.

Assisting at the scene were Monongahela firefighters and Tri-Community Ambulance personnel.
