Meadowcroft, Charleroi get grants
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission this week approved a $50,000 grant for Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village in Avella.
In addition, the commission approved a $20,000 planning grant for the Charleroi Historical District.
The Meadowcroft grant was awarded under the commission’s Keystone Historic Preservation Construction Grant Program.
It will be used to upgrade the 1871 Pine Bank Covered Bridge, the oldest in Washington County. A 2012 assessment found structural problems with the span that require more than routine maintenance to ensure the safety of the public.
Charleroi was awarded a $20,000 project grant to build consensus on preserving and promoting the borough’s historic district.
Both projects require matching grants from sponsors.
