A section of Allison Hollow Road in Chartiers Township from West Pike Street to McGovern Road will close Monday for about a week as work continues to reconstruct the road.

The road will be closed to allow crews from Morgan Excavating to set gabion baskets that will be placed to stabilize the hillside in that section, said Jodi Noble, township manager. The township just received notice of the need for the closure Wednesday. Township officials did expect the temporary closings while the hillside was stabilized as part of the project.

“The baskets have to be put on the road until they are installed because there is nowhere else to put them,” Noble explained. “We do hope to have one lane open at night. And we are hoping to have the road back open by the end of that week.”

Noble said there will not be a posted detour.

Township police Chief James Horvath said that his officers will continue to monitor traffic through the Allison plan. He said patrols in that area have been beefed up since the project began.

Horvath said that Allison Hollow is heavily traveled.

“There is a lot of traffic, particularly when school is in session,” Horvath said. “Traffic will lessen when school closes for the summer, but then drivers are going to have to watch for children playing in the area.

A traffic study done a few years ago showed that 7,500 northbound vehicles a day travel the road north between West Pike and Old Hickory Ridge Road while 5,000 southbound vehicles use the road.

Work on the $1.688 million project to completely reconstruct the road from West Pike to Kings Road began in late March. Noble said that despite delays due to the rain, the work is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of August.

Future plans call for the road between Kings and Hickory Ridge also to be rebuilt.
