MAPLETOWN – Southeastern Greene School Board looked at security measures in the district during its meeting Monday evening. Superintendent William Henderson told the board he would like it to consider purchasing metal detectors. The board will look into pricing and address the issue at a later meeting. Last year, the district hired security guards for its schools.

In another security-related move, the board approved the purchase of three sets of interior doors from Builder’s Hardware and Specialty Co. to be installed in the gymnasium and boy’s locker room at the junior/senior high school. The approved cost will not exceed $7,000 total. Business manager Pat Richter told the board the doors will lock them from the inside, preventing unauthorized entry to the school from school property outside the gymnasium.

In other matters, the board approved a lease with Fike’s Chevrolet for June at a rate of 95 cents per mile for a driver’s education car. It also approved student dental exams in the district to be provided by Evan T. Williams, D.M.D., at $6 per exam.

An annual maintenance agreement with Harris School Solutions to provide support for the district’s financial system was approved at a cost of $9,556.10.

Regarding personnel, the board accepted the retirement of first-grade teacher, Valinda Joy Born, effective June 16. It added Donald Alston to the professional substitute list for the summer. A maternity leave was approved for Dana Pacaloy. Tasha Lanko was added to the professional substitute list and the board approved an agreement with the Intermediate Unit 1 to utilize emergency substitutes for the 2014-15 school year.

A clerical day was added to the district schedule to be held on the day following the last student instructional day for the 2013-14 school year.

Under athletics activities, the board hired several coaches: Breanne Scears, varsity girls volleyball head coach; Adrienne McCreary, varsity girls assistant volleyball coach; Michael Holloway, varsity girls basketball head coach; Michael Gashie, varsity girls assistant basketball coach; Erik Smith, middle school girls basketball head coach; Michael Clark, middle school assistant basketball coach; Wes Loring, varsity boys basketball head coach; Christopher Smith, varsity wrestling head coach; and John Coss as a volunteer assistant football coach. The board also approved Bobbi Antill as the varsity cheerleading sponsor, Zachary Novak as a weight trainer, and Linda Messich as athletic director.

The board gave approval to the Carmichaels Legion Baseball and Greensboro Youth Baseball Association to use the Mapletown Baseball field for summer baseball.
