CARMICHAELS – Carmichaels Area High School will hold commencement exercises for 68 members of the Class of 2014 at 7:15 p.m. Friday in the high school gymnasium.

The class valedictorian is Douglas Allan Kowalewski and the class salutatorian is Michelle Suzanne Frye. The class president, William Tyler Cole, will address the class and call roll.

Jim Crockard, a 1987 Carmichaels Area alumnus, will be the keynote speaker. He is a 1991 graduate of Waynesburg College and received his law degree from West Virginia University. In 1994, he went to work for Ernst & Young LLP, a Big 4 international accounting firm, in their tax practice.

In 2000, he took a full-time in-house position with EQT Corp. in their tax department before being promoted to corporate director of tax, corporate assistant treasurer, corporate treasurer and finally senior vice president of EQT’s production business. During his 15 year career with EQT, he led over $1 billion of public capital financings and participated in the growth of EQT’s Marcellus shale operations.

Kowalewski, son of Robert and Rita Kowalewski of Crucible, plans to attend Gettysburg College and major in history. He was president of the National Honor Society, editor of the student newspaper and a member of the gifted program, Academic League, debate team, yearbook staff, Envirothon team and the chem club.

He received the Abraham Lincoln Scholarship from Gettysburg College, valued at $25,000 per year for four years.

Kowalewski also received an Outstanding Scholar Award and The Daughters of American Revolution Good Citizen’s Award.

Frye, daughter of Victor and Susan Frye of Carmichaels, plans to attend Waynesburg University and major in advertising and business with a minor in theater.

She was a member of National Honor Society, marching and concert bands, art club, newspaper staff and head of the recycling crew. She received a $7,000 per year scholarship to Waynesburg University and a $1,000 per year theater scholarship to Waynesburg.

Cole, son of Rob and Angie Cole of Carmichaels, plans to attend Salem International University and major in physical education. He was senior class president, vice president of student council, treasurer of National Honor Society and was percussion section leader of the high school band. He also was captain of the school’s baseball and basketball teams.

To aid three seniors in their post-secondary school finances, two scholarships will be granted to qualified individuals. The Paul and Dolores Jazwa Lavins Scholarship will be awarded to two graduating seniors while the Holupka-Marinoff Gift Fund will also help pay for one student’s education.
