Off-campus student arrested in Penn State threat

1 min read

STATE COLLEGE (AP) – Penn State police planned to charge a 20-year-old off-campus student with making a terroristic threat to shoot people at the university’s HUB.

Chief Tyrone Parham says the student has told police the post on the social media site Yik Yak was a “prank.” But the chief says, “Alarming an entire community is not considered a joke.”

Police arrested the student Sunday and will release his name when the criminal charge is filed Monday.

The threat was posted about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, and several students alerted campus police when they saw it. Yik Yak lets people make anonymous posts that can be seen only for a few minutes and only within a 1.5-mile radius.

The HUB is a center of campus social life that includes various eateries and other places students meet to socialize.
