Every fall for about the past 10 years, Wilbur and JoAnn Holt of Washington have opened their checkbook and made a donation to the 2000 Turkeys campaign.

This year was no exception, and the Holts’ contribution was among the first received.

“Annually, we decide on what charities we want to contribute to, so we do have a list,” said Wilbur. “We try to stay close to home and help the people around us instead of giving to the bigger fund-raisers.”

Indeed, the 2000 Turkeys campaign provides Thanksgiving meals to approximately 5,400 low-income Washington County residents who otherwise might not be able to enjoy a turkey dinner. Each $15 donation provides a Thanksgiving dinner for a family of four.

2000 Turkeys is the largest single fundraiser on behalf of the Greater Washington County Food Bank and its neighboring pantries.

So far, the campaign raised $7,500, and is working toward its goal of $100,000.
